Shirley knows Iranian history and speaks excellent Farsi, as he reminds us throughout the book. And the book is fun to read, full of detailed dialogue between Shirley and the Iranians he meets along the way. Still, since Iran's revolution more than 18 years ago, hundreds of journalists, academics and resident diplomats have enjoyed extensive access to the country, its leaders and its people and have written about those experiences, often with sophistication and wisdom.
